Lakeview Boys’ Varsity Tennis just misses qualifying for state and takes 4th at Division 2 –#9 Regional on October 11, 2019
The #9 state-ranked Lakeview Boys’ Varsity Tennis Team finished 4th (out of 7 teams) at the Division 2 - #9 Regional on October 11, 2019. The Spartans just missed qualifying by one point as they needed 10 points and finished with 9 points. Portage Northern won the regional with 15 points, 2nd was Mattawan with 11, and 3rd was Portage Central who finished with 10 points. All of these state-ranked teams qualified for the state tournament next week in Ann Arbor.
Lakeview at the Regionals received points from the following players:
#2 Singles - Cole Einhardt – 2 points, #3 Singles – Jacob Van Dis – 2 points, #4 Singles – Kooper Etheridge – 2 points, #1 doubles – James Hager, Vikram Strander – 2 points, and #2 Doubles Soham Desai/Connor Miller – 1 point.
The team finished their excellent season with a 14-1-2 record with their only loss to #2 state ranked Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern. The Spartans had wins over the year against state ranked teams of Mattawan, St. Joseph, Cheslea, Parma Western, and Traverse City Central. The team also had ties against state-ranked teams of Portage Northern and Portage Central.
#1 Singles Senior Cole Henkel (co-captain) had an outstanding year to lead the Spartans. Cole finished with a 14-6 record at the top spot for the Spartans and had to battle the top players in a very strong SMAC Conference.
#2 Singles Junior Cole Einhardt had a great season and finished with a 16-4 record. Cole will be a captain for the team next year.
#3 Singles Senior Jacob Van Dis excelled with an outstanding 18-4 record. As a co-captain he helped the team achieve many goals with his leadership.
#4 Singles Sophomore Kooper Etheridge had the best record on the team with a 20-2 record. Congrats to Koop.
#1 Doubles team of James Hager/Vikram Strander (co-captain) had one of the best seasons for a Spartan doubles team with a record of 18-4.
#2 Doubles team of Soham Desai/Connor Miller continued to improve during the season and had a record of 8-3 for the year.
#3 Doubles team of Freddy Melges/Xander Renker improved through the year and ended with a 10-4 record.
#4 Doubles team of Dominik Kerschbaum/Ethan Magers continued to get better through the year and ended with an 11-7 record.
The team at the beginning of the season won the Jenison Invitational and the All-City Tournament.
